Abstract:
Deals with the antisemitism of Jan Matejko (1838-1893), a famous Polish painter whose works depict the history of Poland. Matejko delivered an antisemitic speech at the beginning of the academic year at the Kraków Academy of Arts in 1882. Presents discussions and protests in the Jewish and Polish press concerning Matejko's speech. Deals, also, with his relations with Jan Jeleński, editor-in-chief of the periodical "Rola", which consistently portrayed Matejko as a patriotic Pole who was aware of the great threat to the Polish nation from "united Jewry". Analyzes historical paintings by Matejko which show his anti-liberal opinions, as well as those which reveal his negative attitude to the presence of Jews in Poland.
