Abstract:
Surveys the Nazi anti-Jewish policies in Germany from 1933, including laws, boycott, the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, and deportations to concentration camps. Focuses on the situation of the Jews in Wrocław (in German, Breslau) and the seven mass deportations between 1941-43. Against this background, discusses the suicides of Wroclaw Jews based on analysis of documents of the Civil State Office. 108 persons committed suicide in the period studied; half of them occurred on the day before one of the mass deportations. Discusses social status, age, sex, religiosity, and other characteristics of those who committed suicide. A list of their names is appended.
