Abstract:
Conflicts with the Polish population in Białystok arose after World War I, when some Jewish leaders advocated annexing the town to Lithuania in the belief that they would receive better treatment than in Poland. The Jewish Russian-language press was also unfavorable to Poland. Other causes of conflict were Jewish representation on the Town Council, an unfounded accusation that Jews supported the Soviet side in the Polish-Russian war in 1920, and the stereotype prevalent among Poles equating Jews with communists.
