Abstract:
Describes the position of the Jews in Poland as a social group protected by the Polish nobility. Compares their situation with the status of the burghers. Discusses the conflict in the second half of the 18th century surrounding the Warsaw quarter called "New Jerusalem", the property of a nobleman, August Sulkowski, built especially for Jewish merchants against extant decrees and the constitution which forbade the settlement of Jews around Warsaw. Sulkowski used various methods, some even dishonest, to obtain the right of settlement for Jews. The issue caused a political struggle for influence in the town, opposing burghers to magnates and Jews. This conflict is an example of the socioeconomic process which gave birth to long-lasting antagonism between Christian burghers and Jews living in the towns.
