Abstract:
Describes the situation of the Jews in the region of Kielce from January 1945 to July 1946, based on reports of the administration in the main towns - e.g. Częstochowa, Radom, Kielce. There were ca. 5,000 Jews in the region; some of them survived the war in Poland, but most were returnees from the Soviet Union. The Jews were in a difficult situation. Besides the problems of housing, making a living, etc., they were targets of attacks by a hostile segment of the Polish population, especially Poles who lived in homes owned by Jews before the war. They were influenced by prewar Polish antisemitism and Nazi propaganda during the war. States that few Poles recognized the tragedy of the Jews during the war. Participation of some Jews in the power structure led to antagonistic feelings about the "Jew-communist". Such hostilities caused many Jews to leave Poland, even before the pogrom in Kielce in 1946.
