Abstract:
Discusses the expulsion of about 17,000 Jews from Germany in October 1938 on the basis of wide perusal of archival material, including testimonies, mainly from the Yad Vashem archives. Describes how the expulsion was carried out, underlining the brutality of the action. States that there were differences in treatment of the people in various regions. Many of the Jews successfully entered Polish territory, but a significant number were detained in Zbąszyń under difficult conditions. The Polish decree of 1938 withdrawing citizenship from Poles living abroad was the direct pretext for the expulsion. This decision was aimed especially at Jews, because the Polish authorities wished to reduce their number in Poland.
