Abstract:
Analyzes unpublished memoirs written in English, "In the Presence of My Enemies", by Żurawin (b. 1919), a Jewish Gestapo informer who was involved in the "Hotel Polski affair" in Warsaw in 1943. The memoirs were written in 1992, for his children, shortly before his death. They present an opportunity to look at a Nazi collaborator through his own eyes. Żurawin portrayed himself as a heroic figure, who never collaborated but rather played a game with the Germans aimed at saving his own family. He wrote that his ties with the Germans had only a commercial and social character. Haska shows that Żurawin's memoirs are full of contradictions, and points out his blatant lies.
