Abstract:
Traces the situation of the Jews in Europe after the Enlightenment, in the period of the formation of national states. The Jews were the only ethnic group living in Europe which was never considered as "genuine"; there was no place in which they could really feel "at home", even if they had lived in some places for hundreds of years. Surveys various aspects of the "Jewish question" in different countries, and points out some sources of conflict between the "genuine" population and the Jews in the Russian and Austrian empires. Discusses, as well, problems of identity of those Jews who tried to assimilate.
