Abstract: The author presents unknown episodes of the underground activity of Sgt. Józef Franczak, "Lalus, a Home Army soldier during the German occupation. These themes are shown against the background of local history, taking into account the closest comrades of the main hero. Franczak is one of the main figures in the pantheon of "accursed soldiers" that is created by the state-sponsored historical policy. The paper analyses in detail the surviving documents of two events related to Polish-jewish relations. It seems that they significantly, if not decisively, influenced post-war Franczak's fate. A comparison of the fate of "Lalus" and that of his two subordinates demonstrates that membership in the Home Army and serious events that had taken place in the past did not determine the post-war fate of underground soldiers. Their fate was often determined not by an ideological choice but a combination of chance, pragmatism and utility for the new communist regime.
