    Abstract: Gdańsk was an important trade center in the 16th-17th centuries, and it attracted Jewish traders from various provinces in Poland and from Western Europe. The Jewish traders were supported by the nobility due to their significant role in the development of trade, but the Gdańsk burghers fought for the expulsion or limitation of Jews in the town. Surveys consecutive decrees which either permitted or forbade the Jews to trade in Gdańsk in this period. States that the main excuse for discriminatory statutes was to avert economic competition; however, there were also religious arguments in support of removal of the Jews, including ritual murder accusations.
