Abstract:
Describes the special international status of Gdańsk in the interwar period. Control over the city by the League of Nations did not allow the Nazis to execute their anti-Jewish policies there from 1933. Up to 1938 there were many anti-Jewish incidents, but an organized policy was introduced only in 1938 after total nazification of the town. Describes anti-Jewish legislation and intensification of the persecutions from 1938, including Aryanization of Jewish properties. These events precipitated a large emigration organized by the Jewish community. From 10,000 Jews living in Gdańsk at the beginning of 1940, only 400 remained - those who were poor, old, or unable to move. Archival documents are appended on pp. 238-250.
