Abstract:
Discusses mutual contacts between Jews and peasants in Polish rural areas throughout the centuries, in contrast to widespread opinions that Poles and Jews formed two isolated groups. The peasants’ perception of the Jews as "strangers", and their formation of stereotypes about the Jewish population, did not exclude contacts and influences on both sides. Supports this view with some examples of the image of the Jew in Polish folk culture.
