Abstract:
The first part of the article surveys historical works dealing with the "Jewish question" in Galicia; the second part describes the figure of Teofil Merunowicz, a Polish conservative member of the Galician Sejm, author of pamphlets concerning the "Jewish problem". Against the background of the development of capitalism in Galicia, discusses Merunowicz's struggle in the Sejm against the equal political rights which Galician Jews obtained in 1867. Merunowicz pointed to the Jews as responsible for the harsh economic situation in Galicia and postulated the liquidation of the "kahals" which, in his view, were an expression of too much autonomy granted the Jews. His parliamentary actions did not engender any change in the status of the Jews.
Note:
On the development of antisemitic ideology in Galicia in the second half of the 19th century, and the attack of the conservative member of the Seym, Teofil Merunowicz, against the Jewish kahals.
