Abstract:
Analyzing textbooks for various grades in elementary and high schools in the fields of literature, geography, and religion, surveys passages relating to the Jews and other minorities. Observes a variety of stereotypical attitudes concerning Jews, both positive and negative. The best image of the Jews appeared in the textbooks for literature, whose authors chose such fragments of literature (e.g. from the works of Maria Konopnicka) which would help to combat antisemitism. Many of the textbooks stressed that antisemitism is in opposition to Catholicism. On the other hand, many textbooks for geography presented a negative view of the Jews as people who do not participate in all the essential professions in society but only in trade. In religion textbooks for elementary schools there was a very simplistic depiction of the "bad" Jews who crucified Jesus. Some textbooks stated that contemporary Jews are still responsible for the death of Jesus. In high school textbooks the image was more complex, and some of the authors underlined the importance of Judaism for Christianity.
