Abstract:
Before the Second World War, ca. 42,000 Jews lived in Lublin. The Nazis entered the town on 18 September 1939 and the Wehrmacht immediately perpetrated riots and looting. Various steps were taken to impoverish and then ghettoize the Jews. Toward the end of 1939, 25,000 Jews were brought to Lublin from other localities in an attempt to establish the "Nisko reservation plan". The Judenrat was founded in January 1940. Describes the role of Odilo Globočnik, as SS head of the Lublin district, in the perpetration of the mass murder. Deportations to Bełżec, Trawniki and Majdanek took place in March-April 1942. A few thousand Jews able to work were moved to labor camps, but by November 1943 all of them had been murdered.
