Abstract:
Wiegand (1906-1983) was a Nazi German war criminal. Between August 1941 - April 1943 he was one of the two commanders of the Police and SS forces in the Warsaw district (he was replaced by Jürgen Stroop). In 1950, Wiegand was tried in Warsaw and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment. However, in 1956 he was released and deported to West Germany. There he was tried in 1961 in Hamburg, where he was sentenced to 12 more years. The author, Leon Tyszka, had been the private secretary of the head of the Judenrat in Warsaw up to 1942, and was a witness at that trial.
