Abstract: Surveys the expectations, feelings, and memory of events of both Poles and Jews at the end of the war and after. For most Poles, the new communist regime was alien and threatening, but Jews believed that this system would end racial and ethnic discrimination. Among Jews, the memory of isolation during the Second World War and the indifference of most of the Poles was prevalent; among Poles, the memory of their own martyrdom was dominant. The image of the Jew as an internal enemy in society was strengthened by Jewish participation in the new communist regime. That image was later manipulated by a nationalistic group which emerged inside the ruling party. Describes the antisemitic campaign of 1968. Discusses, also, the later change in attitude of the authorities in the 1980s.
