Abstract:
Analyzes demographic changes in the Jewish population of Gdańsk between 1929-45. The number of Jews constantly decreased because of the policies of Albert Forster, NSDAP leader in Gdańsk. Various extant sources indicate different statistics for the number of Jews in the city. Discusses the causes of the differing data, and attempts to determine the actual numbers by comparing Jewish and non-Jewish sources. States that in 1929 there were ca. 10,500 Jews in Gdańsk and its environs. According to the Jewish community list, in August 1939 there were about 1,660 Jews. Most of the Jews left Gdańsk because of the persecutions which began in 1933. Traces the fate of those who remained in Gdańsk during the war. Pp. 298-311 deal with the fate of mixed families and their children ("Mischlinge"). Two lists are appended: Gdańsk Jews deported to Theresienstadt, and Jews who were in Gdańsk on 1 September 1939 and were found on the list of Jews in Gdańsk in 1945-46.
