Abstract:
An account of the two important events in the Warsaw ghetto by an eyewitness. States that both the suicide of Czerniakow, chairman of the Jewish Council, and the deportation of Korczak with the children of his orphanage were described many times in all kinds of testimonies, memoirs, etc., which are full of embellishment, pathos, and inaccuracies. Reconstructs, in detail, the days preceding Czerniakow's death, and corrects some facts, among others the date of the suicide (23 July, and not 24 July 1942, as it appears in many sources). Concerning Korczak's last journey, analyzes memoirs written by Adolf Berman, Nachum Remba, Ida Merzan, and Marek Rudnicki. States that these memoirs create myths about the event which are not necessary, because the last march of the children is itself so tragic and moving that it does not need excessive pathos.
