Abstract:
Describes the tensions in Galicia at the end of the First World War, focusing particularly on interethnic conflicts. Though the Jews tried to be neutral in the Polish-Ukrainian conflict, the conviction that the Jews were pro-Ukrainian led to anti-Jewish incidents in a few places and a major pogrom in Lvov in 1918. Deals with reactions to the pogrom in Poland and abroad, and with the discussion concerning the regulation of the Jews’ legal status in independent Poland. Cites a variety of opinions on the question, both Polish and Jewish, pointing to the good will of those Poles and Jews who wanted to settle the problems.
