Abstract:
The first half of the 18th century in Poland was a period of Catholic triumphalism, after defeating the Reformation movements. Discusses the missionarism of Catholic priests among the Jews. Analyzes a text, signed "Lewek Jan Krzysztof, the son of a rabbi", first published in 1728. "Lewek" deals with the causes of the stubbornness of the Jews who do not want to convert and ways for better missionizing. He states that Jews could be forced to convert if their autonomy was limited in Poland. Jews should be obliged, as well, to listen to sermons in the churches. Discusses whether the pamphlet was really written by a convert from Judaism, arguing that Church authorities believed that a text supposedly written by a convert would be more convincing for the Jews. Discusses, as well, various texts written by other polemicists in this period. Concludes that Catholic polemicists wished to limit contacts between the Jewish and Christian population. Contacts with Jews were considered "ideologically dangerous" because the Jews were enemies of Christ. Pp. 213-226 in this issue contain the text of the pamphlet by "Lewek", edited by Rok.
