Abstract:
Discusses reactions in Poland to the publication of Jan Błoński's article "Poor Poles Look at the Ghetto" ("Tygodnik Powszechny", 11 January 1987). The main opponent of Błoński's thesis of the moral coresponsibility of Poles for the Holocaust was the lawyer Władysław Siła-Nowicki. The journal received 180 letters of response concerning this issue. Analyzing the letters, contends that they reflect a deep "Jewish complex" among Poles. Accepting moral coresponsibility would involve the necessity of changing the Poles' image of themselves as a heroic nation and victims of Nazism. Poles in the 1980s were not yet ready to rethink the problematics of the Holocaust from a moral point of view.
