Abstract:
Queries whether there are traces of the Jewish boys in Santomean culture. Summarizes, first, the story of the Jewish children who were forcibly baptized in Portugal in 1493 and deported to São Tomé as slaves. Gives information about the development of the island of São Tomé, and compares some social and religious traditions of the people of São Tomé with the traditions of Sephardic Jews in the Iberian Peninsula. Presents opposing opinions of several authors regarding the fate of those children, and emphasizes the inaccuracy of some historical documents which have caused the spread of incorrect information, especially about the number of deported children and their range of ages.
