Abstract:
Examines the "Paraphrase of St. John's Gospel" (part IV, vv. 88-121), a Greek work by Nonnus of Panopolis (Egypt, 5th century), where the dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman is depicted as an anti-Judaic debate regarding the crudeness of sacrifice. The Samaritan woman represents the Jews, while Jesus embodies the Christians. Jesus argues that the ritual sacrifices must be abolished. Contextualizes the "Paraphrase" in a period of renewed conflict between Christians and Jews, determined by the episcopate of Cyril in Alexandria. Pp. 206-214 mention anti-Jewish works used by Cyril, the anti-Judaic sermons of John Chrysostom (4th century), and the anti-Jewish controversy regarding sacrifice.
