Abstract:
Discusses the situation of rabbis in Italy from 1938 until 1945. The enactment and enforcement of the Racial Laws of 1938 resulted in severe restrictions of their activities, surveillance by the police, emigration (especially of foreign rabbis, not Italian-born, some of whom had escaped persecution in Central and Eastern Europe and took shelter in Italy), and the destruction of rabbinical institutions, such as rabbinical seminars. As a consequence of the racist campaigns carried out by the state and the media, synagogues were, throughout Italy, a target for attacks and rabbis were victims of physical violence. When Italy joined the war in 1940, foreign rabbis who had not emigrated suffered internment and isolation. With the occupation of northern Italy by the Nazis in 1943, many rabbis (foreigners and Italians) were arrested and deported to concentration camps, where most of them perished.
