Abstract:
States that Pope Pius X (1835-1914) was wrongly accused of disdaining Jews and Judaism and that he had good personal relationships with individual Jews, pleaded for "courtesy and philanthropy" towards Jews, and helped halt a 20-year-long antisemitic campaign by the clerical party in Italy. Argues that Pius's hostility to Zionist aspirations in Palestine was understandable as the Vatican's stance when most Italian Jews were also opposed to Zionism. He shared the Italian general attitude of respect and sympathy for individual Jews along with disregard for Judaism as a religion.
