Abstract:
The deep-rooted heritage of antisemitism left its mark on post-World War I Eastern Europe, characterized by fierce nationalism, economic vulnerability and feeble democracy. Jews were identified either with the communists or with the hated former imperial powers. During the 1930s, the economic crisis and Nazi influence on the right-wing parties led to discrimination everywhere except in Czechoslovakia and in the Baltic States. The Polish Jews were victims of a discriminatory economic campaign, violence and pogroms in 1936-38. Anti-Jewish legislation was introduced in several East European countries in the late 1930s.
