Abstract:
Discusses results of a survey on antisemitism carried out by the Anti-Defamation League in 2013-14, based on 53,100 interviews with adults in 102 countries. 27% of the world population have antisemitic attitudes, and 50% have never heard about the Holocaust. The most antisemitic region is the Middle East and North Africa, with an average of 74% antisemitic (93% in Gaza and the West Bank, 92% in Iraq, 88% in Yemen, 87% in Algiers, and 56% in Iran). In Italy, according to a report of the Centro de Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea from 2009, 44% of Italians express hostile attitudes and opinions regarding the Jews; among those, 12% are blatantly antisemitic. Other recent surveys in Italy show that many Italians believe that the policies of the State of Israel are responsible for the growing hostility of the population toward the Jews. In 10% of the cases the hostility is based on traditional religious prejudices combined with xenophobia. In 2005, the European Union Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia updated the definition of antisemitism, which includes the following instances: blaming a whole group of Jews for crimes of individual Jews; denying that the Nazi genocide of the Jews was intentional; accusing the Jews or the State of Israel of inventing the Holocaust or exaggerating it; accusing Jews in a country as being more loyal to the State of Israel; negating the right of the Jewish people to self-determination; using blood libels to characterize Israel and the Israelis; comparing Israel's policies to those of the Nazis; and holding all the Jewish people responsible for Israel's policies.
