Abstract:
Compares two anti-Jewish fragments from Manetho's "History of Egypt", quoted in Josephus Flavius's "Contra Apionem", with the tale of Joseph in Genesis 37-50. States that Joseph's tale was composed by Egyptian Jews, in a positive light, as a refutation of the anti-Jewish charges reflected in Manetho's works. The latter contain expressions of Egyptian nationalism, hatred of Asiatic peoples (eternal enemies of Egypt), and accusations of religious heresy. Manetho, and many others after him, supposed that the Jews were related both to the Hyksos invaders (translated as "shepherds" or "prisoners") and to "Asiatic lepers".
