Abstract:
A revised version of a paper delivered at an international conference in Milano, April 1985. Discusses Holocaust study and the deportation of the Italian Jews. Reviews the main documentary sources for Holocaust events in Italy. Notes that Italian involvement and responsibility in the deportation of the Italian Jews between 1943-44 is underestimated. Emphasizes the distinction between concentration camps - conceived to annihilate adversaries of the Nazi regime and used as a labor force for the Nazi economy - and extermination camps, built for the implementation of the Final Solution. Mentions that 8,613 Italian Jews perished at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
