Abstract:
Discusses the figure of Giovanni Palatucci, police commissioner in the town of Fiume, Italy, who helped rescue many Jews from deportation during World War II. Palatucci was designated as "Righteous among the Nations" in Israel in the 1950s, but was honored by Italy for his acts only in 1995. States that all the aspects of Palatucci's activities in the Italian police on the border with the antisemitic Croatian state are not very clear yet, and that anti-fascist feelings on his part may have influenced his acts. Commends Palatucci (who died after being deported to Dachau in February 1945) and other Italian officials who helped Jews, while noting that other Italians collaborated enthusiastically with the Nazis.
