Abstract:
Examines the role of Judas Iscariot, associated with Jews in the anti-Jewish Christian tradition, as depicted in the 1980 version of the German Oberammergau play and the 1970 rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar". Contends that the Oberammergau play still contains some antisemitic elements, despite revisions made after Jewish and Roman Catholic interventions in the 1960s-70s. The rock musical paints a negative picture of Jewish vendors and high priests, but Judas is free of anti-Jewish associations.
