Abstract:
The Banca Commerciale Italiana (COMIT, today Intesa San Paolo) was founded in Milano in 1894, and became one of the largest banks in Italy. Many of the executive management positions in the bank were held by Jews. As a result of the enforcement of the Racial Laws of November 1938, the bank dismissed ca. 70 Jewish employees, 28 of whom held directorial positions. Some of them found employment in branches of the bank abroad, especially in the United States and South America; others were employed by other banks in the Americas. Many of those who remained in the country when the Nazis occupied northern Italy went into hiding. Three were arrested, deported and perished in Auschwitz. After the war, several employees were reincorporated to their previous positions in the bank. Concludes that the Banca Commerciale Italiana showed compassion and solidarity with its Jewish employees.
