Abstract:
On 9 October 2002 the official process of beatification of Giovanni Palatucci (1909-1945), the last police commissioner in Fiume, was initiated. During World War II, Palatucci rescued more than 5,000 Jews. Relates that at that time, Fiume was the last hope for Jews from the Balkans who fled to Italy. Palatucci helped the Jews in different ways: he directed people to cross into Switzerland or to emigrate to Palestine, or to flee to liberated southern Italy; he dispersed people to refugee camps in Italy, and provided residence permits and safe hiding places. With the Nazi invasion, he destroyed the material in the police station relating to Jews, and objected to German and Ustasha abuses. In September 1943, Palatucci was arrested by the Germans and charged with collaboration with the enemy. He was sent first to the Coroneo prison in Trieste, and in October 1944 to Dachau, where he died in February 1945.
