Abstract: Believing his wife lost at sea, Israel remarries a scheming gold-digger. Shock, tears and laughs abound when his beloved wife returns on the eve of her son's bar mitzvah after a ten-year absence. Starring Yiddish theater superstar Boris Thomashefsky in his only film performance, this musical melodrama is a masterwork of shund, the bread and butter of the Yiddish theater ... An American-made feature film about Jewish Poland (and the "Old Country" more generally), Bar Mitzvah shows how American and Polish Jews caricaturized each other during this period as it represents the pinnacle of low budget movie making. Aside from its unequivocal documentary and historical value, it is a great piece of kitsch. More accurately it is a masterwork of shund - popular Yiddish lowbrow theatrical fare that was the bread and butter of Yiddish theatrical productions. As critic J. Hoberman writes, after lamenting the film's less then stellar production values, "And yet, one must be grateful that "Bar Mitzvah" was made, for, more than any other performer, its star was the popular Yiddish theater incarnate." Abstract: This rare, newly restored feature was originally advertised as "the first Yiddish talkie from Soviet Russia." The plot centers on Nathan Becker, a Jewish bricklayer who returns to Russia after twenty-eight years in America. After reuniting with his father (played with comic eccentricity by Solomon Mikhoels) Nathan leaves the shtetl to work in the new industrial center of Magnitogorsk. There, he soon finds that the work habits he acquired in America conflict with the Soviet system. While the film's resolution emphasizes the triumph of socialist productivity, the screenplay by Yiddish author Peretz Markish reflects the warmth and humor of the Jewish spirit.

Abstract: Stylish women promenade through modern Lwow’s thriving market squares to a piano-and-violin accompaniment suggesting urban rhythms. Also known as Lemberg and home to an old, well-established Jewish community, this city nestled in a valley projects an aura of prosperity. Parks and pavilions punctuate its public spaces as trucks, pushcarts and bicycles ply its busy streets. Among the Jewish community landmarks shown are the Yad Haruzim Trade Union Building, the Old Ghetto, the softly curving exterior of the Modern Temple, the orthodox school, the Moorish-looking Lazarus Hospital and the grave of the "Golden Rose" - filmed in warm, dappled light - and the Nowosci Theater. - Ab 14. [Film-Dienst]

    Keywords: DVD-Video
Abstract: The lively Jewish neighborhoods of Warsaw, including Zamenhof Street and the commercial "beehive" Nalewki Street, were home to 400,000 Jews before World War II. "A Day in Warsaw" sets Warsaw's modern multi-storied buildings and broad streets against its old market square and Jewish quarter. Trucks, trolleys, autos and buses meet horse-drawn carriages, pushcarts and porters in the bustling commercial district. Also shown are the Yiddish Theater, Gensza Cemetery and other Jewish institutions - the community council, hospitals, schools and synagogues. At film's end, after Sabbath services, families pour into Krashinsky Park where children play and adults spiritedly debate the issues of the day. [jewishfilm.org]

Abstract: This collection of songs stems from the partisans (defiant freedom fighters) around the Vilna ghetto and woodlands in eastern Poland during World War II (though performed more recently for this album). The songs deal with the sorrows of occupation, of the then-contemporary murders, of life in a ghetto. They deal with everyday issues in a sense of escapism from what was not the everyday. They deal with the armed resistance movement fighting the Nazis sporadically in the forests, often alongside Russians working toward similar ends. The origins of specific songs range from theater productions within the ghetto to military marches to folk songs. Tying them together, however, is a constant sense of defiance. Whether overt as in the armed partisan marches, or covert as in the theater production pieces, there is a defiance of the authorities and of the times. There is also a sense of hope implanted within the otherwise often depressing works, in the chord structures somewhat, but more importantly within the lyrics, with references to the awaited dawn from the Kingdom of Night. The musical performance on the album leaves something to be desired, but the goal of the album in preservation of the culture and an important movement at an important time is served exceptionally nonetheless. For those interested solely in the music, this album should perhaps be avoided. For those interested in Eastern European Jewry of the time, and the culture in general, it may prove a powerful album. Abstract: This is an album of songs that were created and sung by members of the Jewish underground of Vilna during World War II. This organized, armed Jewish resistance against the Nazis is an ever-inspiring history of young people who refused to accept defeat. The songs express the profound grief and rage, the ordinary longings, the pride in military exploits, the romance of heroism, but most of all the inextinguishable defiance that animated the young fighters. These songs are presented in Yiddish (with English translations), by performers who are dedicated to the ongoing of fashioning cultural continuity with the murdered world of Yiddish-speaking Jews. Performers are David J. Waletzky, Adrienne Cooper, Josh Waletzky, Irena Klepfisz, Michael Alpert and Henry Sapoznik. The songs on this album were originally heard in the 1986 documentary film, Partisans of Vilna, directed and edited by Josh Waletzky. 1 S'Iz Geven a Zumertog - Michael Alpert 2 Yisrolik - David J. Abstract: 'Uncle Moses' is one of the earliest Yiddish sound films made in New York. Produced in 1932, the film joins an impressive list of collaborative efforts between Maurice Schwartz, leading actor of the American Yiddish stage, and director Sidney Goldin, a central figure in the creation of Yiddish cinema and American films
Abstract: According to contemporary reviewers, "Uncle Moses" follows closely the Yiddish Art Theater's adaptation of the 1918 Sholem Asch novel by the same name. Best known for his portrayals of the shtetl, in "Uncle Moses" Asch shifts his focus from Eastern Europe to New York City's Lower East Side at the turn of the twentieth century. In vivid, sometimes comic, yet always soberly realistic images, the film portrays the lives of East European shtetl Jews transplanted onto American soil. The bustling sweatshop and overcrowded tenement serve as the backdrop for a rich thematic blend of romantic intrigue, old and young love, realization of financial success, disintegration of the Jewish family, early struggles of the garment workers' union movement, and the clash of old-world values and new-world dreams. The pivotal role of Uncle Moses, benevolent despot and self-made patriarch among his landsmen, serves as an excellent vehicle for consummate actor Maurice Schwartz. While often flamboyant in his portrayal of this complex figure, Schwartz achieves a characterization of great dignity and compassion
