Abstract: Discusses the UN-sponsored World Conference against Racism which opened in Durban on 31 August 2001, and the expressions of anti-Israel and antisemitic hatred which erupted there. Claims that this UN forum was perhaps unique in the virulence of its antisemitic language and its assumption that Israel deserved to be destroyed. A coalition of regimes, led by Arab countries, attempted to delegitimize Israel and demonize its people. Elements of Holocaust denial also surfaced in Durban. Racism and genocidal behavior perpetrated in other countries was ignored. Besides Israel, the main target was the U.S. A parallel conference for representatives of NGOs was also dominated by antisemitic attitudes, including calls for the reinstatement of the UN Zionism=racism resolution. Expresses disappointment that such groups as Amnesty International failed to repudiate the hate language directed against Israel and Jews. The NGO sessions were "an ongoing antisemitic carnival". Connects approval at Durban for acts of terrorism against Israel with support for the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on 11 September 2001.
Note: On antisemitic demonstrations at the World Conference Against Racism held at Durban, South Africa. , In Hungarian: "Múlt és Jövö" 4 (2001).
