Abstract:
Hungarian Jews engaged in commerce were blamed by the local gentry for occupying the living space of Magyars in the first decades of this century. Growing antisemitism led to the enactment of anti-Jewish laws in 1920 and 1938-39. The third anti-Jewish law was enacted in Hungary in 1941. The declared aim of these laws was the protection of the Hungarian race. The restrictions led to marginalization of the Jews in the economic and political spheres, and ended in genocide.
