Abstract:
The “Siete partidas”, the statutory code written between 1256-65 under the reign of Alfonso X in Spain, includes legislation on the juridical status of the Jews and Muslims in the Kingdom of Castile and León. Part VII of chapter XXIV, entitled “De los judíos”, regulates, through eleven laws, the lives of the Jews vis-à-vis the Christian population. Although the Jews were tolerated in Alfonso's kingdom, they were subjected to strict restrictions and marginalization: e.g. proselytism was prohibited; insulting Jesus was punished with the death penalty; Jews could not achieve a higher status than a Christian in any profession; synagogues could be built, but only with the king's permission; Jews who discriminated against New Christians were punished; no Christian was allowed to work in the service of Jews; sexual intercourse between Jews and Christians was strictly forbidden under threat of the death penalty; and Jews had to wear a distinctive mark on their heads so that Christians could easily identify them.
