Abstract:
Describes the situation of the Jews in Kraków from the Nazi occupation in 1939 and the organization of the Jewish resistance movement. Two Jewish organizations were the most active: Akiva (led by Adolf Liebeskind, Szymszon Draenger, Abraham Leibowicz) and Hashomer Hatzair (led by Hersz Bauminger and Bernard Halbreich). In the beginning they operated separately, but from 1942 on - jointly, under the name ŻOB (Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa). Stresses that these were the only Jewish organizations in Poland which collaborated with the Polish left-wing resistance Gwardia Ludowa and Polska Partia Robotnicza, and took part in armed actions outside the ghetto. Most of the Jewish leaders were captured by the Nazis and executed.
