Abstract: In 1946, the postwar regime in Hungary was forced to deal with the antisemitic tradition of hatred of Jewish capitalists and black marketeers. The pogrom in Kunmadaras in May 1946 was caused by the rumor that Jews were manufacturing sausage meat from the flesh of Christian children. Three local Jews were killed and many were injured. However, the severe punishments meted out to the perpetrators by the court were later reduced to short-term imprisonment. The political background to these events was the struggle of various parties for the popular vote in postwar Hungary.
