Abstract:
Analyzes the attitudes expressed in the Jewish press - especially "Die Jüdische Rundschau", the "AZJ", the "C.V. Zeitung", and "Der Israelit". In the early days of the republic the Jews were optimistic and encouraged Jewish political involvement. But the sharp antisemitic reactions caused them to adopt a cautious position, often highly ambivalent. Pride was expressed when Jews achieved high political office, but their Jewishness was played down. Jews were welcomed only in the democratic and socialist parties, but the newspapers were loath to express support for the Left for fear of the "Jewish-Bolshevist" accusation which was a basic ingredient of antisemitic propaganda. Most of the Jewish political leaders renounced their ties with Judaism (except for Walther Rathenau), but many of them were murdered because they were Jews (e.g. Kurt Eisner, Gustav Landauer, Rathenau). The Jews found themselves more and more engaged in defensive apologetics; the struggle against antisemitism was a constant theme in the Jewish press.
