Abstract:
Surveys developments at Beit Lohamei Haghetaot from the first exhibition in 1949, with its main goal that of educating the public. In the 1950s-60s, the founders of the museum concentrated on collecting documentation, especially documentary films from various countries. The subjects of the permanent exhibits were the concentration camps, the Warsaw and Łódź ghettos, and the deportations. During the 1970s, exhibits were added on Jewish life before the Holocaust and on the Nazi rise to power, and spaces were allocated for study and research. During the 1980s-90s, the museum focused on using modern technology for Holocaust education, particularly through the Internet. In addition, seminars for teachers and students were initiated, special exhibits were set up relating the fate of Jews in particular countries or cities, and universal aspects of the Holocaust were also represented. Today, the museum plays an important role in Holocaust education in Israel.
