Abstract:
Contends that Werfel's novel "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh" (1933), about the reactions of the Armenians in Turkey between 1915-17 to the Turkish government's efforts to exterminate their people, memorialized their ordeal more than did the historical event itself. Leading Zionists in Palestine identified with the ethos of the constantly victimized minority portrayed in Werfel's novel. It brought to mind the image of the Jewish people throughout its history. In the minds of persecuted Jews in Nazi-afflicted Europe, the novel seemed to describe the experiences that they were enduring. Zionist youth movement groups in the ghettos saw in the portrayal of the Armenians an ethos of heroism. It helped them in their confrontation with their inevitable end, and in their hope that they would be remembered in the same way as the Armenians.
