Abstract:
Ringelblum (1900-1944) became involved in aid to refugees through the Joint in October 1938, when he helped Jews who were expelled from Germany to Poland. Although he and his family could have fled to the USSR in 1939, he chose to remain in Warsaw to help the many refugees and poverty-stricken Jews, e.g. by providing them with food and setting up "house committees" to help the poor. His "Oneg Shabbat" archive resulted from the knowledge he gained through this social work. Realizing the importance of such an archive, he persuaded others to join him and write about various aspects of Jewish life. He supported the resistance groups, which convinced him to escape to the "Aryan side" in February 1943; however, he returned in April and was caught and sent to Trawniki. He escaped through a joint effort of Jewish and Polish underground groups and returned to the "Aryan side", where he continued to write. In March 1944 he was discovered and killed, along with his wife and son.
