Abstract:
After the German "historians' debate" of the 1980s, many Germans seemed willing to accept their country's responsibility for the Holocaust. However, most believed that the genocide of the Jews was carried out only by the SS and local collaborators, such as Lithuanians and Ukrainians. An exhibit called "Vernichtungskrieg: Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941 bis 1944", which was inaugurated in Hamburg in 1995 and documented the participation of the Wehrmacht in the genocide, sparked a renewal of the debate on responsibility. The intensity of the debate increased with the publication of Daniel Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" in 1996, but the main focus was on how to build a new German identity, not how to understand the Holocaust more deeply. Most Germans simply want to put the Holocaust behind them.
