Abstract:
Deals with the political shaping of Holocaust memory in Israel in the period between the capture of Eichmann in May 1960 up to the Six-Day War in 1967, focusing on the role of David Ben-Gurion and of the Eichmann trial. Eichmann's capture and trial were initiated and orchestrated by Ben-Gurion in order to create national unity by mobilizing the issue of the Holocaust at a time when it could be made relevant to Israel's struggle for existence. Ben-Gurion made numerous references to the then-ongoing connections between Arabs and Nazi leaders and to Arab Nazi-like intentions to annihilate Israel. Eichmann's trial was also Ben-Gurion's response to critics regarding his rescue policies during the Holocaust, the reparations agreement with Germany, and the Kasztner affair. In the weeks prior to the Six-Day War, the Holocaust memory was evoked in propaganda against the Nazi-like enemy who was endangering the existence of Israel. After the war, Holocaust discourse was used to justify the politics of power.
