Abstract:
Gives results of a study based on a questionnaire distributed in May 1989 to 590 tenth grade pupils from all over Israel and 560 freshmen at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev (in Beer-Sheva). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the contribution of the "working through" process of the Holocaust to the approach of young Israelis towards their own identity, democratic thinking and political tendency, and attitudes towards Arabs. Results showed that how they relate to the Holocaust affects the way they relate to present actuality and vice versa, even though the past and present are very different. Variables that could have helped develop a more differentiated and complex understanding of past and present (knowledge, understanding, and emotional reactions) had almost no effect on their attitudes and behavioral intentions which are radically polarized in linking past and present.
