Abstract:
Analyzes the development of Jewish self-defense in German-speaking countries, focusing on events in Germany. In the 1880s-90s self-defense was an individual matter. Gives examples of Jewish students who challenged antisemitic students to duels, and Jews who disrupted antisemitic meetings or challenged the antisemitic speaker in debate. Antisemitic agitation abated in the early 20th century, but arose again in 1916 and continually increased thereafter. Jewish self-defense was then organized in groups and movements, which were doomed to failure because of the rising tide of antisemitism and disagreement about how to confront it. Those most active in Jewish fighting units were the socialists and "Ostjuden". Discusses the positions of the Centralverein, the Reichsbund Jüdischer Frontsoldaten, and the Zionists. Describes attacks against Jews in the 1920s. Although the CV and RJF failed to form a united front with the defense organization Eiserne Front, many Jews joined the organization and fought the Nazis up through 1933.
