Abstract:
Following the COVID-19 crisis and the ensuing lockdown in Israel, this study examines the relations between state anxiety and social support (formal and informal), work-family conflict (WFC), and happiness among married and single mothers by choice (SMBC). While previous studies have examined differences among single women, usually divorced, and compared them to married mothers, this study compares SMBC to married mothers. A convenience sample (snowball) of 679 mothers, including 386 SMBC and 293 married, was conducted using a closed online questionnaire sent via Facebook or WhatsApp. Consistent with the study’s hypothesis, the findings indicate negative correlations between level of social support, level of happiness, and types of support (friends, family, and significant others) and level of state anxiety. The study also finds that during the pandemic, most of these women did not turn to formal aid agencies such as welfare agencies. Finally, the study indicates a positive correlation between state anxiety and WFC. The obvious conclusion is that welfare agencies in general, and local welfare agencies in particular, should develop a database on single mothers, put “contingency plans” in place, and establish policies that will address sensitive and vulnerable populations in emergencies.
