Abstract:
A critique of Bialik's stance in the poem, in which he blames the Jews for their own victimization and shows no compassion for the persecuted. Contrasts this attitude with the eyewitness testimonies collected by Bialik in 1903 but never published by him; the testimonies were published in Israel in 1991, in a collection edited by Jacob Goren. Shows how the heartrending descriptions in the testimonies are not reflected in Bialik's poem, which he wrote in place of publishing the testimonies. In effect, Bialik chose to describe the Jews in a negative light, showing their weaknesses and their failings. His intention was to strengthen the Jewish character and to promote Zionism, but, after the Holocaust, the poem's emphasis on blaming the Jews for their weakness and victimization is no longer tenable.
